DescriptionOil painting of Matthew Baillie, (1761-1823) by Sir Thomas Lawrence, 1806. Baillie became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1790. He wrote The Morbid Anatomy of some of the most Important Parts of the Human Body (1793), establishing morbid anatomy as an independent science. Baillie gave the first clinical descriptions of gastric ulcer and chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema and presented one of the clearest descriptions ever written on the pulmonary lesions of tuberculosis. In 1810, he was appointed physician-extraordinary to George III.
