DescriptionPortrait of Henry Moyes (1749/50–1807) engraved by John Kay, 1796.
Henry Moyes was born near Kirkcaldy in Fife, Scotland. He caught smallpox when he was an infant and was left blind by the disease. Moyes became an M.D. but was unable to practice medicine due to his visual impairment, and instead became a lecturer on chemistry and natural philosophy in Edinburgh, where William Nicol helped to carry out practical demonstrations. Natural philosophy was a term used before the development of modern science, meaning broadly the study of nature and including a wide range of topics that we would today see as distinct disciplines, such as botany, zoology, astronomy, anthropology, physics and chemistry. Moyes travelled round England and lectured all over the country, as well as spending a few years lecturing in the USA from 1784-6. He continued to travel and lecture throughout his life, accompanied by Nicol, until his death on 10 December 1807.
John Kay was an artist who created many caricature portaits, of which this may be one.
