Description17th century antimony cup with leather case. This or X410 was presented to the RCP by Mr Gundry, the husband of a descendant of Baldwin Hamey Junior. The cup was owned by Hamey and was reputedly bought in London, in Gunpower Alley at the sign of the Magpie in 1637 for 50 shillings.
Antimony cups were used for purging. Wine and spices would be placed in the cup to steep overnight and absorb the poisinous heavy metal before being administered. Purging was belived to bring the humours into balance.
