Creator James Wales (Artist), W. Nutter (Engraver)
DescriptionPortrait of Cowasjee by W. Nutter after James Wales, published in 1795. Cowasjee was a bullock driver for the British Army who was taken prisoner by Tipu Sahib, Sultan of Mysore (c1750-1799) who cut off his nose. He was given a new nose by using wax template and a skin graft from his head. The interest in this case paved the way for rhinoplasty in Europe and America.
