DescriptionFacemask and breathing tube apparatus used in ether vapourisation for anaesthetic purposes and designed by Dr John Snow, 1847. Owned by Benjamin Ward Richardson and donated by his daughter.
Although a label on the object indicates that it was used to administer anaesthetic to Queen Victoria during the birth of her daughter Beatrice in 1857, diaries from the time show that this was not the case. The actual procedure used at Beatrice's birth was much simpler, involving the use of anaesthetic on a handkerchief.
