Three-quarter length, seated to left in a high-backed chair; his left hand in a white kid glove rests on his knee; wearing a round puffed black velvet hat, light brown wig falling to his shoulders; very dark brown eyes; white hands, scarlet physicians robes over dark clothes; brown background, with a curtain left. Inscribed at the top on the right, in yellow letters: Richard Hale M.D. and in small letters at the extreme bottom right: Richardson. Pinxit
