TitleMessenger Monsey
DescriptionPortrait of Messenger Monsey (1693-1788) by Mary Black. Oil on canvas. Monsey was a 'medical oddity, but with considerable mental acuteness'. As a physician he despised modern improvements and stuck to the habits he acquired in 60 years' experience. He left his body for dissection, contacting the anatomist a few days before death to warn him to be ready to proceed.
Almost whole length seated in an armchair and wearing a fashionable pink coat; his head resting on his right hand, his left hand drooping over the arm chair, holding steel-rimmed spectacles. There is an open book, turned downwards resting on his left knee. Short powdered grey wig; blue grey eyes; coat, waistcoast and breeches of pale oyster grey satin; wrinkled white stockings; plain brown background.
