TitlePortrait of a man (Andreas Vesalius)
CreatorUnknown (Artist)
DescriptionPortrait of a man, previously identified as Andreas Vesalius, (1514-1564) unknown artist, date unknown. It is not by Johan Stephen von Calcar as inscribed but may be a copy of a lost original by Titian. The portrait was believed to be of Andreas Vesalius, the Belgian anatomist who became professor of Surgery at Padua, Bologna, and Basle, and whose revolutionary approach to human anatomy was most clearly demonstrated in his De Humani Corporis Fabrica (1543). The portrait was rejected as a portrait of Vesalius, in M.H. Spielmann's study 'The iconography of Andreas Vesalius', 1925.
