In 1785, royal midwife Michael Underwood called these silver discs a ‘new contrivance ... for defending the nipple’. Nipple shields protect and soothe nipples while breastfeeding a baby. This sophisticated silver version, with ventilation holes around the base, was briefly popular in wealthy homes.
