TitleJohn Arbuthnot
DescriptionFramed portrait of John Arbuthnot MD, FRS (1667–1735), oil on canvas, unknown artist after Sir Godfrey Kneller, 18th century, of the English School of painting. The portrait is half-length, Arbuthnot is shown seated wearing a scholar’s turban and banyan over a white shirt. A later copy of the original portrait by court painter Sir Godfrey Kneller (held by the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow).
Arbuthnot was a Scottish polymath who in this early career worked as a mathematics tutor. He studied medicine at the University of St Andrews and was made MD at Cambridge University. He famously treated Prince George of Denmark and later became physician extraordinary to Queen Anne. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1710 and served as censor in 1723. Outside his professional life he was an avid writer, satirist, playwright and a founding member of the Scriblerus Club. He created the character ‘John Bull’, a classic and enduring caricature of England and Englishness, in his works of political satire. The diarist Dr Johnson famously described him as the ‘most universal genius’. His works are frequently taught as essential works in English literature.
