Scope and ContentThe book contains large number of remedies and receipts, including a few of cookery, but is remarkable for the large number of names of doctors mentioned. Among them are Twine, Stevens, Cesar, Smith, Lapworth, Fryer, Mountforth, Bates, Mathias, etc.
The book is numbered in pages. From the front of the book the pages run from 1 to 182, then there is a section which was cut out several centuries ago, then there are 32 unumbered pages written from the back to the front.
On p.5 "An excellent oyntment made of English Tobacco".
"A most sovereign water wherewith Dr. Stevens did many cures . . . before his death he revealed it to the Bishop of Canterbury".
"Another excellent water for the plague was given by King Henry VIII to his army at Bollogne."
"A medicine for the stone brought out of Spaine by Mr. William Harrington."
"To make the Clove Pill much used by Queen Mary."
On page 71 there is a note in the margin: "Here beginneth my Lady Knebbits Book.", which ends on page 167.
The last 32 pages contain copies of letters exchanged between a Mr. Wm. Hughes and Sir William Catching, and one from Mrs. Antrobus to Mr. Hughes, mostly dated 1632 and and 1633.
"Articles of Lord Digby Earl of Bristoll, whereby he chargeth the Duke of Buckingham in the Upper House of Parliament ..." May 2nd, 1626."
A report on Parliamentary proceedings on 8th and 10th May, 1626." Taken by John Wenham and sent to Sir Ferdinando Gorges, Governor of Plymouth, etc., etc
