Scope and Content430. Monsey (Dr Messenger, physician [1693]-1788. A.L.s. 4 pages, closely written, 4to. Chelsea College, 12 Jamuary 1767, to a lady, a trenchant letter; he asks for coals from her father's new mine ("...the Rascal who furnish'd my Coals I believe digg'd 'em out of Fleet Ditch..."); describes his "hermetical" life at Chelsea and freindship with her father (...They talked the modern cant of bilious and nerves....I plainly saw...a fever"); reminisces about his early life as a country doctor ("...riding his Bones to a Jelly almost....stupidity & slip-sloppery of drivling nurses and conceited chambermaids...These things bring to mind what Dr Mead told me Radcliffe gave to him as a piece of advice..."); discusses his own attitude to money and comfort; he is now trying to save a young patient ("I never did actually kill an old ugly fretful one..."); describes his journey to Exeter with Dr. Baker; etc. slight wear.
