Scope and ContentThe parliamentary Subcommittee on the Design of Dwellings (part of the Central Housing Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Health) wrote to the RCP in 1942 to ask for their input regarding the design of post-war working class housing, from a health perspective. The subcommittee’s terms of reference were ‘to make recommendations as to the design, planning, layout, standards of construction and equipment of dwellings for the people throughout the country.’
The main points discussed in the correspondence, motivated by questions raised by Judith Ledeboer, joint secretary of the subcommittee, were around the optimal size of bedrooms and methods for heating them.
