Admin history: Sydney Arthur Monckton Copeman was born at Norwich on 21 February 1862, son of Rev. Canon Arthur Charles Copeman, L.L.D., Canon and Rural Dean of Norwich. Copeman was also nephew to Edward Copeman, Canon’s elder brother, M.D., F.R.C.P. (1809-1880), senior physician to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, the author of several books on obstetrics and gynaecology, and President of the British Medical Association in 1874. Edward Copeman was heavily involved with the Norfolk and Norwich Musical Festivals, being appointed the Chairman of the Norfolk and Norwich Musical Festivals from 1857 till 1878, remaining a Committee member until his death in 1880.
Production date 1824 - 1890
Scope and ContentThe collection contains material relating to the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. This includes a series of correspondence relating to the earliest instances of the Norfolk and Norwich Triennial Musical Festival from 1824-1832 which was established to fundraise for the hospital, and a series of other letters relating to the Hospital which relate to the opening of a new Hospital building in 1883, and the Midwives Registration Bill.

Archival historyThe collection was presented by Dr Copeman as part of a "Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Collection," and has therefore been kept together in its original fonds. Although most of the collection simply states that it was presented by "Dr Copeman," one record specifically states it was presented by "Dr S.A.M Copeman," likely referring to Dr Sydney Arthur Monckton Copeman. It is likely, but not certain, that the rest of the collection presented as the "Norfolk and Norwich Hospital Collection," was also presented by Dr Sydney Copeman. There is a possibility part of the collection was donated by his uncle Dr Edward Copeman (who was heavily involved with the Norfolk and Norwich Musical Festival) but as some of the letters were dated after his death this is unlikely. The records ALS/C149A, ALS/M76-77, and ALS/M245 did not originally state in their archival history that they were presented by Dr S.A.M Copeman, but were included within this collection for posterity given that they likely originate from the same or similar original collection.
